“I dream of Alluvium” was inspired by Edouard Glissant use of the word “alluvium”. Alluvium is deposit of sediment in river beds due to floodwaters that creates very fertile soil. This idea is used as a metaphor to represents the diversity of the Caribbean and celebrates it as a source of richness and creativity.
In my piece, the harmony progresses from not dissonant to extremely dissonant to illustrate the progressive blur and mix of tones to create alluvium. In between this blurriness I combine certain groups of instruments to perform soloistic passages, mixing the musical identity of the work between a chamber music piece and an ensemble piece. I want to show that within the opacity, there is singularity both on a musical level (with each performer) and on a metaphorical level.
